
Special Olympics is the world's largest sports movement for people with intellectual disabilities and was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy-Shriver in the USA. The organization was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1988 and now has 6 million athletes in 200 countries. The organization has been represented in Switzerland as a foundation since 1995 and offers competitions in 21 sports, holds National Games every two years (winter and summer) and accompanies Swiss delegations to World Games.
