Special Olympics is the world's largest sports movement for people with intellectual disabilities and was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy-Shriver in the USA. The organization was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1988 and now has 6 million athletes in 200 countries.
The organization has been represented in Switzerland as a foundation since 1995 and offers competitions in 21 sports, holds National Games every two years (winter and summer) and accompanies Swiss delegations to World Games. Special Olympics also promotes the development of inclusive sports programs within existing sports clubs and popular sports events. The vision of Special Olympics is to use the power of sport to create an inclusive world in which people with intellectual disabilities can lead an active, healthy and fulfilling life.
